The Magic Flute (German: Die Zauberflöte) is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which premiered on 30 September 1791 at the Freihaustheater in Vienna. The libretto was written by Emanuel Schikaneder. Formally, The Magic Flute is a Singspiel and, with its fairytale-like contents and spectacular stage transformations, follows the tradition of the Old Viennese Magic Theatre. The three-hour work, in which the protagonist Prince Tamino has to face several quests before he can prove his worth and win Pamina’s hand, is one of the world's most famous and most frequently staged operas. The work's famous arias are also familiar to many who have never even seen the opera before.
There are many references to the aims of Freemasonry (a fraternal order which Mozart supposedly was a member of) in The Magic Flute: humanity, moral purification of man, charity. The opera was in general influenced by the philosophy of the Enlightenment: focussing on the triumph of reason and virtue over irrationality and evil.
The Magic Flute is one of the most interesting and whimsical works in musical history with its mixture of Viennese suburban theatre, Masonic symbolism, popular myths and fairy tales of all kinds.
Like all other operas by Mozart, The Magic Flute also has wonderful melodies, performed by the Vienna Opera House Orchestra (Staatsopernorchester). The Orchestra consists of prestigious musicians and several members of the internationally renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Don't miss these unique performances that will embellish the festive pre-Christmas season in Vienna even more.
