The composer Giuseppe Verdi created the opera Otello on the basis of the famous work of the same name by William Shakespeare (“Othello”). The premiere took place on 5 February 1887 at Milan's Scala. The opera takes place at the end of the 15th century in Cyprus.
Verdi's Otello is based to Shakespeare's menacing drama, he transformed it, however, and created an incredibly gripping work of opera that is also profoundly modern. The timeless story illuminates human emotions: love, jealousy, innocence, envy and anger. Verdi's unique melodies and the depth of feeling being displayed lead to an almost ecstatic opera experience that captivates the audience from beginning to end.
Almost immediately after the world premiere of Otello, the opera was incorporated into the repertoire of the Vienna Opera and to this day continues to enjoy great popularity.
