Lucia di Lammermoor is a two-part opera by Gaetano Donizetti in three acts (tragic opera) after the libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, which was loosely based on the novel The Bride of Lammermoor by Walter Scott. The premiere took place on 26 September 1835 at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples. Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor is one of the most popular masterpieces of Italian romantic opera. The plot takes place in Scotland in the 16th century against the backdrop of feuds between Catholics and Protestants, as two members of the hostile noble families Ashton and Ravenswood fall in love with each other.
Lucia di Lammermoor has been a phenomenal success ever since its premiere and has been included in the repertoire of numerous world-famous opera houses. Lucia di Lammermoor, together with Don Pasquale, is thus one of the few operas by Donizetti to have had an uninterrupted tradition of performance since its premiere. The opera is also regarded as one of the highlights of the Belcanto opera era and is particularly famous for its "Mad Aria" (Il dolce suono).
At the Vienna State Opera, the unique melodies of the Belcanto opera Lucia di Lammermoor will be brought to life by the wonderful performance of the Vienna Opera House Orchestra (Staatsopernorchester). The Orchestra consists of prestigious musicians and several members of the internationally renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
