The Marriage of Figaro (Original Italian: Le nozze di Figaro) is an opera buffa (musical comedy) in four acts composed in 1786 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, with an Italian libretto written by Lorenzo Da Ponte. It premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 May 1786. The opera's libretto is based on a stage comedy by Pierre Beaumarchais, La folle journée, ou le Mariage de Figaro ("The Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro"), which was first performed in 1784.
In the opera Le nozze di Figaro, the Count d‘Almaviva falls madly in love with the charming maid. Susanna, however, is engaged to the valet Figaro, and while the Count tries to seduce her his wife, the Countess, tries to reconquer her husband. The complex storyline is characterized in particular by its art of precisely reflecting the feelings of the protagonists within the music. And finally, the long-awaited happy end is approaching. Le nozze di Figaro, despite its very intricate plot, is generally regarded as the most successful of Mozart's great operas. This is his first opera buffa since La finta giardiniera, written more than ten years earlier.
