The famous ballet Le Corsaire was originally written by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges, who wrote the libretto based on the poem The Corsair by George Gordon Byron. The choreography of today's Le Corsaire is based on the unique version of the work by Marius Petipa and others. Since its premiere on 23 January 1856 at the Paris Opéra, the work has been considered one of the most impressive story ballets of the 19th century. Manuel Legris, the ballet director of the Vienna State Ballet, created a special version of this traditional ballet for his ensemble. In doing so, he carefully combined action, music and choreography from the rich French and Russian tradition of the work, which he interpreted from his point of view and experience. The plot of the ballet takes place on the coast of the Ionian Sea at a time when Greece was occupied by the Turks and focuses on the highlights of the colorful hustle and bustle around the couple Conrad and Medora. The opus also enjoys international renown for its so-called "Le Corsaire - Pas de deux".
Le Corsaire is a top-class experience especially during Christmas season & winter time in Vienna.
