La traviata is an opera by Giuseppe Verdi, with the libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. Verdi wrote his opera based on a play that was adapted from the novel "La Dame aux camélias" from 1848 by Alexandre Dumas fils. His music, rich in nuances and subtlety, focuses exclusively on the emotional life of the main characters. La traviata is Verdi's most personal opera and the only one in which he has set contemporary material to music. It became a model for Verismo, the naturalistic approach of Puccini and other composers.
La traviata premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice on 6 March 1853 and failed with audiences before finally becoming one of the most successful operas in music history. Verdi placed a person rejected by society at the center of the story: this time a noble prostitute (courtesan) suffering from tuberculosis; choosing her as the title character of an opera was very daring for the time. Desired but also disreputable, the beautiful courtesan Violetta lives on the fringes of society until one day she meets Alfredo who loves her with all of his heart.
The constantly on stage-present Violetta represents one of the most coveted but also most challenging roles for a soprano voice due to the variety of expression and her large vocal range. Many great singers such as Maria Callas and Teresa Stratas or more recently Anna Netrebko and Olga Peretyatko have already celebrated triumphs with her. This time the star Aida Garifullina plays Violetta.
Verdi’s beloved masterpiece La traviata invites its audience to fall in love with its unique and wonderful melodies, performed by the Vienna Opera House Orchestra (Staatsopernorchester).
