La Bohème is an opera by Giacomo Puccini. It premiered in Turin, Italy, in 1896 and is now one of the most frequently and regularly performed operas worldwide. It is the fourth of Puccini's operas (he created 12 operas in total) and is by many considered his masterpiece. La Bohème is close to the genre of the "Verismo", a style of Italian opera at the beginning of the 20th century, which deals with life, suffering and loving of ordinary people. The opera takes place in Paris around 1830 and tells the love story between the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimì, who is seriously ill but thanks to Rodolfo is able to experience the happiness of love. The work is a large, thoroughly composed dramatic form in four acts and without any overture. In particular, the opera is characterized by its unity of text & music as well as unique melodies. La Bohème is one of the most important operas of the turn of the century.
