Nutcracker

The Nutcracker is a fairy-ballet tale structured into two acts, which was commissioned by the director of the Imperial Theaters Ivan Vsevolozhsky in 1891 and premiered in 1892. The music was composed by Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky between 1891 and 1892. It is his 71^st opera and the third of his ballets. In the original production of the choreography was created by the great Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The libretto was written by Ivan Vsevolozhsky and Petipa himself, based on the adaptation of Alexander Dumas (father) of the tale The Nutcracker and the King of the Mices, by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann.

Since its premiere, the Ballet has been represented in many different venues and has become one of the most popular ballets in western countries, mainly represented in Christmas. That fact makes the music of the Tchaikovsky ballet one of his most popular worldwide. The music belongs to the romantic period and contains some of its most memorable melodies, several of which are often heard on television or movies, especially during Christmas.    

The Russian dance or “Trepak” is one of the most recognized pieces of the ballet. The Waltz of the flowers, The March or Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy are also worldwide known. The ballet contains amazingly advanced harmonies and a wealth of melodic invention unparalleled in ballet music. However, the reverence of the composer for rococo music and music of the late eighteenth century can be detected in passages such as overture, Entrée des parents and Tempo di Grossvater in the first act.
